Samayapuram Mariamman Temple is one of the renowned Shakthi shrines of Tamil Nadu. It stands on the Chennai – Trichy National Highway, around 20 km from Hotel Blossoms.

The Goddess of Samayapuram

Mariamman is the main goddess here. She is very powerful, and devotees fondly call her “Amma” (Mother).

“Samayapurathal will protect her devotees in times of need” – Samayapuram Mariamman Samayathil Kaappal

Devotees believe Mariamman protects them even when they are far away from her, in any part of the world.

History of the Temple

The present form of the temple was built in the early 18th century by King Vijayaraya Chakkaravarthi. Another interesting fact: the Goddess is made only of sand and clay.

One story says the Mariamman idol was once at the Ranganathaswamy (Lord Vishnu) temple in Srirangam. A respected chief priest believed the idol had caused illness to Lord Vishnu, so it was moved out of the Srirangam temple.

Devotees passing by later found the idol and built a temple for it, named the Kannanur Mariamman Temple.

After a war and a shift in the Vijayanagara Empire, the deity was moved from Kannanur Mariamman Temple to Samayapuram. A holy shrine was built there to celebrate the empire’s success.
